FAQS

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic (a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium) is a material injected into facial muscles to reduce or eliminate crows feet, wrinkles and frown lines.

How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?
By relaxing the muscles that create wrinkles, BOTOX® Cosmetic minimizes wrinkles that that occur with overuse of facial muscles.  It attacks wrinkles at their source. The negative image of frowning is stopped and the lines created by frowning are improved.  The same applies to forehead lines and crows' feet. By eliminating the cause of wrinkles, we can help to prevent them from returning or worsening.

Is BOTOX® Cosmetic safe?
BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used with extraordinary success and safety for a variety of medical conditions since the 1970s and for facial wrinkles since the early 1990s. It is extremely safe with no known long term consequences after over 20 years of use. It became FDA approved for treatment of facial wrinkles in the Spring of 2002.

What are the side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic?
The most common side effect is minor stinging at the time of injection. The needles we use are of such small caliber that clients tolerate BOTOX® Cosmetic extremely well and are amazed at the minimal symptoms. Occasionally, minor bruising can take place after the shot (lasting a few days) and rarely, droopy eyelid (ptosis) can occur for up to 6 months.

Who is not a candidate for BOTOX® Cosmetic injections?
Patients who are pregnant, on anticoagulant therapy, or with neurologic disease such as multiple sclerosis or ALS should not have BOTOX® Cosmetic therapy. The use of BOTOX® therapy for migraines is not currently approved by the FDA.

How long will my BOTOX® Cosmetic injection last?
It typically has its onset of action within a day or two, peaks in a week and lasts 3-4 months, and up to 6 months. The duration is a function of the dose used, strength of facial muscles and intervals between treatments. Regular users find they need it less often as wrinkles vanish and muscles of the face relax.
